020 Ana Milikian – Open Your Mind and Discover…

Ana Milikian 020 (1)

In this episode of Practically Conscious, I talk with Ana Milikian,

psychologist, marketing coach, motivational speaker, and host of The Mindset Zone – one of the Huffington Post’s top “15 Podcasts that Will Leave You Pondering Life’s Big Questions”.

I love so many things that Ana does.  When she finds a challenge, she goes to the best teachers out there.  She focuses her coaching on a specific group of clients, working with people who are already passionate about making a difference.

She places an importance on gratitude, not as a general concept, but she insists on  getting specific about what we are grateful for.

We discuss many other topics, including exercise as a means of helping reduce stress and anxiety, traveling as a way to see the world from a different cultural point of view, and having the courage to be imperfect as opposed to using perfection as an excuse for postponing action.

This is definitely an episode worth listening to- enjoy!

018 Annica Beigler – Motherhood, Work, and Relaxed Living

annica 018

In this special Mother’s Day edition of Practically Conscious

I talk with Annica Beigler about her unusual ability to manage – in a relaxed way – career, family, and the challenges of every day life.  She does things so naturally that sometimes she doesn’t even know how it happens, so I had to do some probing to find some tips and techniques that the rest of us can apply to our lives.

Annica has had difficulties like the rest of us, but she talks about what she’s learned from her upbringing, and the abilities she’s developed to be fulfilled and live a balanced life.  If you are a mother and find yourself overwhelmed at times, this is the episode for you!

Happy Mother’s day to all the mothers out there and a special thanks to my mom and the wonderful mother of my beautiful daughter!

Enjoy!

Best Yoga on the Web – Friday, January 31,…

For yoga teachers and serious students, “Best Yoga on the Web” is your hand-picked guide to this week’s best of the best yoga and meditation from around the world.  This week – a great meditation app, mindfulness hits the cover of TIME magazine, and Mothering With Mindfulness.

STOP, BREATHE & THINKstop, breathe, think

Stop, Breathe, and Think is a new meditation app from the non-profit organization Tools For Peace (TFP).  They got together a great team and made an awesome app – it makes meditation accessible and fun, and explains the basics and the benefits super clearly.  For example, here’s how they describe one of the benefits of mediation:

Have you ever been in a bad mood and didn’t know why?  You can practice mindfulness to figure out what’s going on in your head, and to see how it’s impacting your feelings and actions.

After a quick registration, when you start the app, you to take 10 seconds to check in with how you are feeling.  Based on your responses, you are given a couple of meditations in the 5 to 10 minute range, with names such as “body scan, compassion, and equanimity.”  The app keeps track of your progress, emotions, check-in streak, and provides stickers.

I particularly like that the maker of the app, TFP is reaching out to youth with a mindfulness and compassion based curriculum, after-school programs, and summer camps for teens.  Give Stop, Breathe & Think a try, it might just become a daily healthy habit!

MINDFULNESS HITS THE COVER OF TIME MAGAZINE

g9510.20_mindful.indd

Next week’s cover of TIME magazine features “The Mindful Revolution.”  Sometimes I wonder if yoga and meditation are as popular as I think they are, or if I just notice things because they are passions of mine.  According to the TIME article, if you live in Silicon Valley, eyebrows are raised if people hear you are NOT practicing meditation!  I’m doing my part to make this the norm everywhere.  Pretty basic article, but TIME is good for getting the word out.

MOTHERING WITH MINDFULNESS mothering with mindfulness

As a new parent, just the name of the blog, “Mothering With Mindfulness” got me excited!  For new parents trying to find our way while keeping to our yoga and meditation roots, Kim Corrigan-Oliver provides lots of mindfulness based inspiration.  Kim’s advice is not so much “how to”, as leading by example.  Kim, her husband, and son live in a converted one room school house, grow much of their own food, and provide home schooling.  Definitely check out what’s going on at Mothering With Mindfulness.
