010 Eric Picard – On Ships, Love, and Serving

About his adventures on merchant ships from South America, to Europe, the Middle East, and around the world, to his climbing the ranks to become a Captain of ocean going vessels.  Eric’s career then shifted to diplomacy and international relations through  USAID.  He has been in most of the world’s dangerous places, places where many of us don’t get a chance to go, such as North Korea, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Kosovo, and Iraq.

The last several years, Eric has focused on civil and political rights in the developing world.  We discuss the toll this type of work, helping populations on a large scale, can have on people, and some of the tools that are used to keep people healthy and fulfilled.

He is currently exploring a career shift to become a writer.

One of the books Eric recommends in the show is Dan Buettner’s, The Blue Zones.

How to Discover Your Natural State of Balance

Our natural tendency in all aspects of life, if we let it, is to come to a natural state of balance. I know this can be hard to believe if your life situation is currently difficult, but balance is already there within you, if you can gain the courage to let it happen.

A good start is to spend some time pondering the question “What am I?”. “Who am I?” implies a self, so “what am I?” is a better, less dogmatic question to ask yourself.

Take the inward journey. It is easier than you think, once you get started.  It’s like being an explorer in an unknown land full of adventure, but the great thing is, all the dangers are imaginary.

If your current state feels out of balance, it is because your mind and it’s false sense of self has led you here. If the illusion feels real, the sooner you start self inquiry, the better. On the path to truth, you must pass through internal fear, anger, confusion, and frustration to get to the light of truth on the other side. Some of what you will see on the journey you may not like – meet this with forgiveness. In general, meet yourself with compassion and you will make it to truth.

In truth, you don’t need the past pain, scars, and trauma that your mind is holding. However, you can’t simply get rid of this stuff, you have to take the “what am I?” journey to find how to let these things go.  Sometimes you will discover the source of pain, sometimes you will need to find the courage to let it go without first understanding.  The results are you see yourself clearly, and everything in you that is not needed, not helpful, and not true will fall away.

I like to think of getting rid of our past scars and trauma as similar to being in a small boat and throwing the unneeded things overboard – the boat will rock, but if you let it, the boat will return to its natural state.

Our most natural state is balance. You just have to find the courage to look inward and find a way to let it happen.
