You are a Garden

Mademoiselle Gachet in her Garden, Vincent VanGogh, 1890

Imagine a garden planted with seeds for the most beautiful plants. The seeds sprout, buy the gardener is inexperienced and the plants are overrun with weeds. The gardener gets discouraged, somewhat overwhelmed, and the garden becomes increasingly messy.

Then one day the gardener, discouraged but now more experienced, sees a beautiful flower from one of the original seeds poking through the weeds. With redoubled effort the gardener again begins clearing weeds. The gardener uncovers another flower, and another, and yet another. With excitement and energy, the gardening becomes more pleasant, and the weeds fall away more easily. The long ago planted seeds have blossomed into amazing plants and now have plenty of room to flourish. There is still a bit of tending needed around the edges of the garden, but the garden has become a beautiful place.

The seeds are the core of your true self. The weeds are your experiences, your pain, your trauma and your ego. The gardener is your spiritual practice. The whole system taken together is you. The seeds are there in every single one of us. Figure out how to uncover them.

You are a garden.
